TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a method of pain relief that has been used successfully worldwide for many years by pregnant women and professional midwives to treat labour pain naturally. TENS promotes the release of endorphins (the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals) while also creating a barrier in the brain to block the pain signals.
It works by sending gentle electrical pulses through the electrodes attached to the skin. These pulses stimulate the body’s nerves to block pain signals to the brain and encourage the bodies own release of endorphins. At the onset of labour, apply the four pads to your back as shown below and switch the Babycare TENS machine on. Increase the intensity to a comfortable level so that you can feel a pleasant pulsing sensation. When experiencing a contraction, use your device according to its specifications. If there is a booster feature, press the booster button for the extra surge of power needed to combat the pain during the contraction. When the contraction ends, press the booster button again - it is that simple!

Normal mode-The pulsing sensation has been discribed as "buzzing, tingling, waving or prickling". The sensation is constant.
Boost mode-A more intense sensation for the period that the button is activated.
The maternity TENS is specifically designed for labour. This means that:
It's overall power setting is greater than a standard TENS machines
Elle TENS has an additional feature-OPTI-MAX technology, which provides a reserve power for the later stages of labour, in contrast to the standard units which reach their maximum power level quickly making them less effective for labour.
It has functionality to assist during contractions like the Boost button functionb which is applied during during a contraction. It provides a constant, higher power sensation for a more effective pain relief.
It has functionality like the burst button which is intended for use when you are not having contractions.
A mother feels as though she has more control over the pain-relief than if she is using a standard TENS unit.

For the most effective results we recommended as soon as contractions begin. This will enable your body to naturally produce endorphins, which are essential for reducing pain during childbirth.
No. Babycare TENS machines are specifically designed for childbirth. A Babycare TENS machine uses larger pads than conventional TENS machines and include a booster button, which is very important for relieving pain during the contractions. Other Elle TENS models can be used for general pain management after childbirth and even for pelvic floor rehabilitation, particularly with the SensaTONE models, which are used for treating incontinence.
Yes, once you have reached 37 weeks of pregnancy, it is a good idea to try your machine so that you know how it works before labour begins. To do so, remove two pads from the packaging and connect them to one lead. Place both pads onto the skin of your forearm . Adjust the settings to feel the different pulse sensations. Remember to follow the instructions on the back of the electrode packet to keep them fresh for the big day. It is recommended that you order an extra pack of electrodes for practicing. Get used to using the boost feature on your device for when the real event takes place.
Yes, but you may have to switch it off temporarily if the midwife requires you to do so.
Yes, in conjunction with gas and air or pethidine.
Yes, but not in the water itself. It is recommended to use TENS right from the start of your labour to build up your endorphin level. As a midwife will usually ask you to enter the water when you are 4-5cm dilated, TENS is an ideal pain-relief solution up until this point. It is recommended that you order an extra pack of electrodes if you are planning a water birth.
To allow time for your endorphin level to rise, begin using your machine one hour before your induction. See Instructions for further information.
Yes. They are an effective, safe and non invasive tool designed for pain relief during labour. However, do not use before the 37th week of pregnancy unless under medical supervision.
Yes. If you suffer from epilepsy or have any doubts whatsoever consult a medical professional. If you use a demand type pacemaker you should not use a TENS machine. See full list under Contra-Indications .
There are no known side effects for mother or baby. It is safe and drug free.
Yes, you can use the machine beforehand for pain relief. It is particularly effective for the early stages of labour when you are at home with no other pain relief available. The machine can also be used from 37 weeks of pregnancy for back pain and there after for general pain relief following labour.
Yes. Babycare TENS machines have been cleverly designed for use after labour too. You can use your machine for:
Afterbirth pains
Post-operative pain following a caesarean section*
Shoulder pain from breastfeeding
Menstrual pain
Back pain
*Pads must be placed on your back
The electrodes have varying lifespans based on usage and maintenance. Electrodes on average last 10-15 uses, but as they become less sticky or effective, they should be changed. See Electrode/Stimulating pads for application method and care of pads.
The units use AA batteries, which are easy to replace. Remember to have an extra set as a spare for day of delivery.
Trim or shaving the area where the electrodes will be placed can significantly improve adhesion. Always clean the area thoroughly after shaving to avoid irritation.
Use adhesive gel or spray. Applying a thin layer to the skin before attaching the electrodes can help them stick better.
Use pre-gelled or "sticky" electrodes. Some electrodes come with a built-in gel that helps them adhere better, these are better on hairier areas.
Use a skin prep wipe. These can clean and slightly abrade the skin, improving the electrode’s ability to stick. These wipes often contain alcohol and other agents that remove oils and residue from the skin. Never apply to the skin if there are any lesions.
Secure with medical tape. After placing the electrodes, you can use hypoallergenic medical tape to help hold them secure in place.
Ensure the electrodes are positioned correctly and press them firmly against the skin for a few seconds to improve adhesion.
*Trying a combination of these methods should help the electrodes adhere better, even with excessive body hair.
