The correct application of Elle TENS electrode pads is crucial for effective pain relief. Here’s how to apply them properly.
Prepare the skin properly.
-Ensure the skin is clean, dry, and free from any lotions or oils where you plan to place the electrode pads.
-Shave any excessive hair in the area to ensure better adhesion and stimulation.
Application method.
-Apply firm contact with the palm of the hand.
-Press from one end to the other and hold for a few seconds.
-Always place the electrodes back on the sticky sheet after use.
Electrode Pad Placement for Labour.
The electrode pads should be placed on the lower back, on either side of the spine, approximately 1 inch(2.5cm) from the spine.
First set of pads are placed about 4–5 cm below the bra line, this corresponds to the Thoracic spine level 10(T10).
Second set of pads are placed about 4–5 cm above the top of your buttocks or in line with the crease line of the buttocks, this corresponds with the Sacral spine level 2(S2).
These areas corresponds to the nerve pathways associated with labor pain and target the nerves that transmit pain signals from the uterus and help block them before they reach the brain.
T10-L1 supply the nerve roots from the cervix to the posterior horn of the spinal cord.
S2-S4 supply the nerve roots from the perineum(area from the anus to the vulva) into the spinal cord.
For the top pads the lead wires must face downwards.
For the bottom pads the lead wires must face upwards
Electrode placement for Post-Labour or Other Pain Relief.
Back pain-Place the pads around the area of pain on the back, avoiding the spine itself.
Pelvic floor Pain or postpartum pain-consult the specific guidelines in your user manual for electrode pad placement that targets the area where pain is most intense.
The TENS can be used for other types of pain management. See diagram below for placement of pads.
*Once pads are securely placed on the skin, then plug the leads into the TENS unit.
After every use place the electrodes back onto the sticky sheet or plastic backing to preserve the adhesive. Replace the pads when they lose their stickiness or effectiveness.
Avoid contact with water, oils or lotions. Do not use the Elle TENS device with electrodes when in water, such as during a water birth.
*Following these guidelines ensures optimal pain relief and avoids issues such as reduced sensation or poor pad adhesion.
